Why Contacts Need a Fitting and Glasses Do Not

People are often annoyed to find that a current glasses prescription does not entitle them to buy contacts. The reason is not administrative. A lens resting on the eye is a different object with different measurements behind it, and it has to be checked on the eye it will be sitting on.

What the fitting measures

The curvature of the front of the eye, the size that suits it, and how a trial lens actually sits, centers and moves when you blink. A contact lens prescription names a specific lens by design and parameters, which is why it is not interchangeable across products.

Why renewals still involve a check

A renewal is not a reprint. It is a look at how the lens you have been wearing is sitting and how the eye surface underneath it is doing. That is also the visit where wearing habits come up honestly — including sleeping in lenses or stretching a monthly lens well past the month, both of which the practice would rather hear about than not.

Astigmatism and reading age

Astigmatism is fit with toric lenses, which have to hold their orientation on the eye rather than spin freely, so how the lens settles matters more than usual. Needing reading correction as well is handled with multifocal designs or with other arrangements a practice can walk you through. Neither situation is unusual.

Eyes that soft lenses have never suited

Rigid lenses and scleral lenses exist for eyes that standard soft lenses do not fit well, including irregular corneas. What varies enormously is which of these a given practice fits regularly. Ask directly how often they fit the lens type you are asking about, and say up front what you have already tried and how it failed.
